Hi,
I really hope this is appropriate for this community.

I dont surf but I want to learn..

I am 19 and have wanted to l surf since I was about 16. I was either a) scared of humiliation or b)landlocked (I tend to move a lot). Anyway, I am back in the San Francisco Bay Area right now, and though not near the coast I am willing to make the drive to the beach everyday to go surfing (whatever it takes basically). I am alternately frightened of humiliation and really excited. Not in the best of shape right especially in terms of upper body strength, but I am hoping that will come with time. My boyfriend surfs but I am not really willing to look stupid in front of him. I think surfing will come hard to me I am by no means a natural athlete.

So I was wondering if you guys could give me an idea of where to start out. Should I rent a board or buy one? If you're from the Nor Cal area, I'd appreciate a guide to beaches maybe? Should I attempt to teach myself or get lessons?

Thank you so much for the advice, truly. I went out twice couldn't get off the board the first time-- humiliating, but sooo fun. The second time was slightly better-- slightly.
